Salvador Mendez
Birthplace: Arizona
My passion is art. I remember as a child I would sit
in my room for hours. I would draw, create art,
anything that was art related I would do. I am
Salvador Mendez, the artist. I recall there was a
ceramics class in the neighborhood, so I signed up.
That was in 2002. I have always enjoyed drawing
portraits, so sculpting faces seemed like a natural
progression.
The masks represent a mixture of my Mexican descent
and influences from ancient Mayan culture. In 2004 I
got a chance to visit the pyramids of Yucatan Mexico
and fell in love with the Mayan ruins, which has
become a great influence in my work.
The work I have put into my mascaras (Spanish for
mask) has helped me embrace my Mexican/American
heritage and has also served to heal my soul. As I
create each mask I put a little of my essence into
them as well as inspiration from the Mayan culture.
This is my calling. To this date I have created over
one hundred masks. I have started to branch out into
other items: boxes, incense burners, candle holders,
vases and light fixtures all mask related.
